Isa 55:6

Elul is the 6th month

3 40 day period from shavu'ot to Yom kippur

Shavu'ot -17th of Tammuz

17th of Tammuz -elul 1

elul 1- yom kippur

3 times Moses went to Mount Snai while in the wilderness

the 3rd time he went up the mountain was on elul 1-yom kippur

Mat 3:1-17

In those days, John the Immerser came proclaiming in the wilderness of Judea, “Turn away from your sins, for the kingdom of heaven is near!” For he is the one Isaiah the prophet spoke about, saying, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way of Adonai, and make His paths straight.’” Now John wore clothing from camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then Jerusalem was going out to him, and all Judea and all the region around the Jordan. Confessing their sins, they were being immersed by him in the Jordan River. But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his immersion, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Therefore produce fruit worthy of repentance; and do not think that you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father’! For I tell you that from these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. Already the axe is laid at the root of the trees; therefore every tree that does not produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire! “As for me, I immerse you in water for repentance. But the One coming after me is mightier than I am; I am not worthy to carry His sandals. He will immerse you in the Ruach ha-Kodesh and fire. His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He shall clear His threshing floor and gather His wheat into the barn; but the chaff He shall burn up with inextinguishable fire.” Then Yeshua came from the Galilee to John, to be immersed by him in the Jordan. But John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be immersed by You, and You are coming to me?” But Yeshua responded, “Let it happen now, for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” So John yielded to Him. After being immersed, Yeshua rose up out of the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Ruach Elohim descending like a dove and coming upon Him. And behold, a voice from the heavens said, “This is My Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased!”

(Matthew 3:1-17 TLV)

40 days of being tempted matt 4:1-10

Then Yeshua was led by the Ruach into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After He had fasted for forty days and forty nights, He was hungry. And when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are Ben-Elohim, tell these stones to become bread.” But He replied, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Then the devil took Him into the holy city and placed Him on the highest point of the Temple. “If You are Ben-Elohim,” he said, “throw Yourself down. For it is written, ‘He shall command His angels concerning you,’ and ‘upon their hands they shall lift you up, so that you may not strike your foot against a stone.’” Yeshua said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put Adonai your God to the test.’” Again, the devil takes Him to a very high mountain and shows Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me.” Then Yeshua says to him, “Go away, satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship Adonai your God, and Him only shall you serve.’” Then the devil leaves Him. And behold, angels came and began to take care of Him.

(Matthew 4:1-11 TLV)

Elul starts the season of Teshuva

Teshuva is the death of the past and the rebirth of new life

(Micah 7:18 TLV)

Teshuvah

let us look back in retrospect and acknowledge our failings. Before we can set our feet on the correct path we must acknowlege where we have gone wrong.

Read the word elul אֱל וּל from back to front with the insight of retrospect and you discover two words וּל lo to him; אֱ ל no or not. To him , to the almighty who is the source of all goodness and reason for our exstence, we have to often say NO to ourselves. We did not heed his commandements. We didnot follow his instructions. Recogniition of sin is the first step on the road to repentance.

Life can only be uderstood backward. But it must be lived forward. With the month of elul we complete yet another year of our lives. To understand it howerver we must preceive it backward. That is the message of Elul.

read Elul in reverse and it is a hebrew word as well לולא (lulei) were it not for

how different this year might have been were it not for ..... my foolishness, rebelliousness, my insesitivity to my fellow man, my immodesty, and my exafferated sense of self toward God.

I look back, see how I have failed and sayלולא were it not for my failings, I could have achieved so much more. " those who do not learn from the past are comdemed to repeat it" then I will be siser. Elul with the insight of the backwards look will teach me to welcome the new year with a mind set that will ensure a year written and sealed for goodness.

2peter 3:14

Therefore, loved ones, while you are looking for these things, make every effort to be found in shalom, spotless and blameless before Him.

(2 Peter 3:14 TLV)

Teshuvah means to return

What are we turning to or returning to ?

Elul

אֱלוּל

Rabbai Abulafia teaches the word lev needs to be understood as 2 lameds becaes the letter bet is the # value of 2, so he explains that eh word needs to be read and unterstood as 2 lameds in oredr ther their to be a relationship, 2 lamedes must be conected and be face to face so wer turn the lamed around to we can face each other. Since that is our desire to be face to face with God we form the image of the hebrew heart.

In the word elul we see the the 2 lameds but somthing is seperating them from the intemet relationship they desire and that is the vav. Vav pictures the man our own selfishness and flesh seperates us from the father.

Isa 6:10

Make the heart of this people fat, their ears heavy, and their eyes blind. Else they would see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and return, and be healed.”

(Amos 3:8 TLV)

the Jews believe when God makes himself a manifest on this can we possibly be immune to his message?

The roar of the almighty takes many forms. He may be heard through events ; He also speaks throgh the calendar as He proclaim, Like a lion אריה (aryeh) the teachings of His holy days

Traditions for Elul:

  • blowing the shofar every day

  • reading psalms 27

  • selchot

  • (which include the 13 attributes of God)

Merciful God, merciful God, powerful God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in kindness and truth. Preserver of kindness for thousands of generations, forgiver of iniquity, willful sin and error, and Who cleanses. (Exodus 34:6-7

Adonai is my light and my salvation: whom should I fear? Adonai is the stronghold of my life: whom should I dread? When evildoers approached me to devour my flesh—my adversaries and my foes—they stumbled and fell. Though an army camp besieges me, my heart will not fear. Though war breaks out against me, even then will I be confident. One thing have I asked of Adonai, that will I seek: to dwell in the House of Adonai all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of Adonai, and to meditate in His Temple. For in the day of trouble He will hide me in His sukkah, conceal me in the shelter of His tent, and set me high upon a rock. Then will my head be high above my enemies around me. In His Tabernacle I will offer sacrifices with shouts of joy. I will sing, yes, sing praises to Adonai. Hear, Adonai, when I call with my voice, be gracious to me and answer me. To You my heart says: “Seek My face.” Your face, Adonai, I seek. Do not hide Your face from me. Do not turn Your servant away in anger. You have been my help. Do not abandon me or forsake me, O God my salvation. Though my father and my mother forsake me, Adonai will take me in. Teach me Your way, Adonai, and lead me on a level path—because of my enemies. Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes. For false witnesses rise up against me, breathing out violence. Surely I trust that I will see the goodness of Adonai in the land of the living. Wait for Adonai. Be strong, let Your heart take courage, and wait for Adonai.

(Psalms 27:1-14 TLV)
